To His Excellency
Mr. Vladimir Putin
President of the Russian Federation

Kiev is a sister city of Kyoto, and I am writing you on behalf of the Kyoto UNESCO Association and its members regarding the most recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia. This invasion has caused great sadness and concern for the tragic implications this decision will have on not only the people of Ukraine, but also on the peace and stability of the world.

For the past 80 years many Japanese citizens have carried with them a burden of guilt for the Imperial Japanese Army’s invasion of sovereign territories in Asia in the years prior to World War II. Your county has also suffered foreign invasions in its history therefore you should understand the burden this current situation will place on future generations.

Since the end of World War II, the Kyoto UNESCO Association has been promoting peaceful dialogue as a means to resolve conflicts. We are asking you to cease the invasion as soon as possible in order to find a peaceful solution to this crisis through the utilization of official diplomatic talks with the Ukrainian government.

With highest consideration I am writing you with this request for an immediate cease of the invasion of Ukraine.

Sincerely,

Daijiro Ai
President,
Kyoto UNESCO Association
